Maintenance is an important part of owning any 4x4 utility ATV. No matter how much you dislike the expense and the time it takes for maintaining your ATV, it must be done.
The two most important ATV maintenance tasks to are:
- Clean and/or change the air filter.
- Check and/or change the oil.
Why should you change the oil in your ATV so often? Here are some statistics:
- According to USA Today, the average car lasts 10.8 years. The average driver drives that car 15,000 miles per year. That would equate to 162,000 miles on the average car before a major overhaul is needed. According to The New York Times, the average car now lasts 200,000 miles.
- Compare that to an ATV. The average ATV should last 8,000 miles before a needing a major overhaul. If we use the 200,000-mile mark for cars, that would be a 25:1 ratio! Every ATV mile equals 25 car miles. If you wait for 500 miles between oil changes on your ATV, that would be equivalent to 12,500 miles in your car. Are we saying you should change your oil every 25 miles? No, but you may not want to wait for the 500-mile mark either. Just some information for you. Ride safe.
